Miguel Cotto is a professional boxer who was born in Puerto Rico in the year 1980 on the 29th of October. He is a very established boxer and he is a four time world champion in three different weight categories namely welterweight, light welterweight and light middleweight division. He is the current WBA super light welterweight champion and had been defending his title successfully for quite some time. His first title was in the light welterweight division which he won in 2004. Hi opponent was Pinto who was his age but he had won against Cotto on their two previous amateur level ties.
The match was broadcasted by HBO and there was a lot of anticipation among the crowd regarding this title match. Both fighters were evenly matched but Miguel Cotto came out victorious and scored three knockdowns. The secret behind this victory was that Cotto used a very unconventional defense stance with his hands much higher up to cover his face and thus he did not let his opponent score over him. On December the same year, he was pitted against Randal Bailey for his title defense. Randal was a very tough competition and the match was evenly contested but here again Miguel Cotto scored knockdowns and landed heave blows on the face of the opponent. Randal’s face suffered many injuries especially beneath both the eyes and he could no longer compete. Later he was given a rematch but again Cotto emerged victorious. His victory was attributed to his speed and accuracy. He trained hard and gained weight to move into the welterweight division and he was immensely successful in this division as well. He became the welterweight champion by defeating fighters who were more experienced than him. His victory came due to his excellent technique achieved after eyars of hard work and training.
Miguel Cotto received a lot of fame and recognition following his victories in these divisions and he trained harder and harder to achieve more match fitness so that he could defend his titles. He got a lot of publicity from magazines such as Sherdog which described him as a very promising boxer and one of the better boxers of current times. However, all this fame did not make him lose focus and he remained to be highly motivated and he always thrived to better himself. He leads a very discliplined life as he believes that discipline is the key to success in boxing.
